The Blue Umbrella Poster Review

Audience/Narrative

This poster is very simple yet very telling. The poster doesn't really give a lot away initially, but when you look closer you notice that there are a number of black umbrellas of different shapes and sizes all staying in order, but there are two coloured umbrella's not following the patterns of the others around them, they are out of line and are the only two non black umbrellas in frame, this indicates to the audience that the story is about two umbrellas (more than likely personified umbrellas representing people) that don't conform to the normal expectations around them. The umbrellas colour and shape indicate that the blue one is more masculine and maybe represents a man and the red one indicates a female, and based on the positioning of the two umbrellas it reveals to the audience that this is in fact a love story between two personified umbrella's who find love in a world filled with black conformist umbrella's this tells the audience that it is aimed at both men and women, there is also a "Pixar animation studios" watermark underneath the graphic and so this indicates that this is a light hearted love story aimed at men women and children, as Pixar are known for doing short film animations that are enjoyable and relatable for all ages and genders.

Genres

This is an animated short film that falls into more than one genre it is a family, fantasy, and a romantic short film, the poster reveals all of this. it tells the audience that it is suitable for all the family as it has Pixar animations on it, and they are a company that exclusively make family friendly animated films/short films, this immediately tells the viewer/audience that they shouldn't expect anything unsuitable for a family.

The poster indicates that it is a fantasy as it has personified umbrellas in the covering graphic, this subsequently indicates to the audience that it is not a hyper realistic short film and that it is set in a fantasy made world. The romance comes in as the two umbrellas who are different colours and shapes are personified to be more masculine and feminine by following conventions of masculine/feminine shapes and colours and this indicate's that the umbrellas have a gender and that they are in love as they are leaning towards each other in the poster.
