Little White Lies Annotation

As you can see from this annotation of a actual Little White Lies review page we have noted the measurements needed to make sure that the review page looks exactly like a Little White Lies review page. We have also included information on what needs to be included in certain parts of the review page.

Final Poster

This is the final poster idea the simple look reflects the main protagonist whilst linking to a thing most people do before interviews (get coffee) as well as that it reflects the film as the film is very minimalist and so is the poster, the incongruity of the coffee is funny to reflect that its a simple comedy.

In Design Mock Up Of Layout LWL

Here is a mock up of the design template we will use to add our little white lies review to, the image and text are obviously temporary until we finish finalising the review we have written up.

Typical Structure of Little White Lies Review

Lexis
The Lexis used in Little White Lies reviews is normally quite complex and whitty, we think this is because if the language used is complex than the audience begins to trust the opinion of the writer as they feel that they must be smart and well educated, this subsequently has the effect of validating the opinion of the writer, which helps to achieve the goal of the review which is to persuade and inform, and in this instance it persuades the reader by validating the writers opinion.

Structure
The structure of a review in the Little White Lies magazine is that there are between 5 and 7 paragraphs, however most of the time there are six. the first and/or second paragraph would be an introduction to the film and how the film was made, the third and fourth paragraphs are most likely to talk about the cast of the film and discus the movies basic plot with a short opinion, the final paraghraph/s is normally a review/conclusion on the film as a whole, this is typically where the writer signs off witha witty comment relating to the film to leave a lasting thought in the readers head almost like the strap line of the review.

Rating System
Rather than star ratings, Little White Lies rates films based on three things: Anticipation, Enjoyment, and in Retrospect, this allows for a broad and thorough review of each film that the reader can understand and enjoy as well as trust and relate too, it is hard to truly understand how good a film is based on 5 stars as everyones opinions are different and you can never see just how good the different main aspects of each film are, however this rating system is broad and covers all the aspects that a film lover (their target audience) would love to hear about.

What are the layout conventions of LWL

The Layout of the magazine Little White Lies changes there theme each time there is a new addition and because the addition of the magazine targets different types of target audiences this influences the layout of the magazine. The magazine itself has a about 15 - 17 adverts in each addition, depending on who the target audience is depends on what adverts they put into the magazine. Most of the adverts in the magazine are advertising films that are out or that are coming soon, the type of film being advertised depends on the themes of the magazine and also the target audience for that issue.
They cover of the magazine always has a different picture on it this picture is either of an actor or a film character and these are always drawn by hand. The layout of this cover however is again always the same, with the picture of the issue covering the whole cover and the title of the magazine Little White Lies at the top in the middle in a white circle. The title in the white circle makes the cover stand out but also it is recognisable.
When they are creating the magazine they first place the adverts in the magazine and work there way around the adverts that have already been placed. However they need to input adverts based on the target audience between 25-35 year olds who are mostly male. The adverts are always going to be within that target audience range. The adverts however split up the sections of the magazine. For example, there would be a section on reviews and within that section you would have adverts to split up the different reviews.

The layout on the review pages are the same each time and are very specific with there measurements the image for this review is always placed at the top of the page the measurements for the picture page are 168mm x 70mm the image never goes to the edge of the page, either top or side it is always in the middle. The title of the film that they are reviewing always goes directly under the image and the director, starts and the release date are under each other, the title is always bigger than the rest as that is what they are reviewing. There are always three columns and there are always roughly 5-6 paragraphs. The measurements for this are also very specific this is so everything can fit on the page the measurements for the columns are 52.4 mm x 107mm.
There are three boxes in the bottom right of the page and there are always filled with ratings the rating are for anticipation, enjoyment and retrospect rating. These ratings are good as most of the time they are right with what they say.

Little white lies

Little White Lies is an internationally distributed movie magazine. It is published by London-based media company TCOLondon.

Little White Lies rose out of the ashes of Adrenalin, an adventure sports and lifestyle magazine. When Adrenalin's publisher went bankrupt, a group of friends working there decided to turn designer Danny Miller's student degree project "Little White Lies: Issue Zero" into a full-fledged magazine.
The design of each issue is inspired by its feature film, often represented on the cover by an illustration of its lead actor. The cover film also influences interior aspects, such as editorial icons, chapter headings and custom typefaces. However, the overall template of the magazine remains the same. It was called "the best-designed film magazine on the shelf" in The Guardian. Its content is split into three acts: the lead review, a series of feature articles inspired by the cover film, and the reviews section, which also includes interviews with directors and stars of upcoming movies. The magazine uses a three part ranking system.] The categories ("'Anticipation", "Enjoyment", and "In Retrospect") are marked out of five and accompanied by explanatory text.
This film review from the magazine Little White Lies clearly demonstrates the audience they are trying to go for. First of all we know they are not targeting a specific gender this is because the writing and layout is good for either men or woman. The writing it self is very specific it talks about the details of the film like the directors, and it assumes that the reader knows about each director and they're style, this tells us that the company is aiming for people with a lot of knowledge in the film industry already and so it assumes that the reader has a knowledge and passion for film so that it can cut out all the filler and get straight to the technical of each film, that appeals to the audience also because they already know a lot about film and so are only reading for key important facts and and techniques used by the crew of each film. we know that the magazine appeals to all ages above 16 because it has old and new film references and so is liked by all however kid below 16 wouldn't have watched the majority of films being reviewed due to some of there taboo natures.

Jordan's Design Analysis for Little Whitle Lies

The design layout for the 'Little White Lies' magazine is a very unique and important part of the magazine, in every issue the style changes with the theme of the magazine, for example the front cover of the '1994' issue and the 'Django Unchained' issue is so different, with the colours and text.

As you can see they are two very different images, however they still share the same iconic 'LWL' logo. When you go in the magazine you see a similar pattern and that's that its not all just text then image, then text then image, its more bold words and art followed by illustrations on a double paged spread, so there design is such a unique one because no one else uses that kind of design.

But when you get to the review half of the book we start to see more of a structure; a set of about 5 - 10 pages of reviews with all the same layout, they use three column structure with the title in bold above it and then a picture of what this film is, then down the side is a rating of each part of the film.

The different fonts, sizes of fonts and use of bold and italics make this extremely clear to read, especially as every page is like this. For example the first word in the review, 'Remember' is so clear, and such a powerful start, all because of the drop text 'R' at the beginning gives it such a bold start off to the review. The title itself and text too is written in a very clear font that is easy to read, however it is a plain font making it look a little more sophisticated. I believe that the review page is designed like this because with the Big picture of the film at the top, it will be the first thing you read, then you would read the director, cast and release of the film and then on to the review. So the further down you read the more it becomes clear what the film is about, and what film your reading about, a very good way to captivate the readers, by putting the easiest thing to look at first because it makes you want to read on.

This design and layout really captivates the magazines target audience because of bright colour, complex text and beautiful art design, people reading have no choice but to be captivated in the art and beauty of the magazine, not one book has a boring, or similar design so it would never get old, the reason there never the same, and to why it captivates the audience so much is because they are always themed after a certain film, and as the audience that would be purchasing and reading these are filmmakers, filmgoers or students in film, this would suit them very well.

12 Years a Slave Poster Review

Media language.

This poster gives off a very serious and gripping vibe to us, i feel like the image of a cloured man running in a clear area dressed on slave clothes, is such a powerful image because we can tell he is running from something, and with the name '12 years a slave' it creates alot of emotion and shows freedom to us, whoch is quite intriugeing and inspiring, making us want to watch the film. we can tell that this film is set in the past, with the films title, and the baggy, dirty clothes; all implies that he was a slave or maybe still is and slavery hasnt been a thing for years and years. So i think along with the lighting and Mise En Scene a very powerful and meaningful image is created and really pulls in an audience.

The target audeince is very clear, with a dark and tragic theme of slavery we can tell that this is for a more mature audience, like adults and teens.

Layout of Poster.

The layout of the poster isnt too complex but it just looks a little more complicated then others. i think that this is because a there is an all white background, and then the main character, or what we can tell is the main character as he is the only one; and in the main character, are reviews, the cast and the title of the film too, which is a little bigger then the rest of the text. i think that the text was put onto the main charcter because it shows that theres alot on him and it focuses us all on the running of the character and centralises him more.

Imitation Game Poster Review

Media Language

In this poster we can see that this film is going to be a very serious film, this is because it shows that it is going to be intulectual, for example the calmed colour behind him is very soft and easy on the eyes, the tag line is hard to read and you have to read between the lines and figure out what it says. the words 'enigma' suggests mystery and intellengence. we can clearly see that this film is set in the past aorund the 40s because of the tweed jacket andpatched shirt and tie, he also has his hair waxed back and is mart too.

i would say this film is for people between the ages of 15 to pretty much any age, this is because the serious look he is giving just from this i dont think that it is going to be a lighthearted fun film.

Layout
The title and cast are very small on the poster, so they can tell that the title isnt where the message is at, its all in the facial expressions of Benedict Cumberbatch and this shows off as he is covered in the yellow cirlces with the tagline 'Behind Every Code Is An Enigma'. I think this is a good use of the actor, and a good way to show off the slogan too because it gives an insght into the film, saying that behind every computer code in a mystery so its saying that they have alot to discover and come across in the film, creating mystery for us. This makes the poster different as poeple see and read that more then the title.

Take Your Time Poster Analysis

In this poster we get the feeling that the genre of this film is going to be a non fiction film, looks to have a very emotional story, that could be happy or sad. The blue backgound that surrounds the boy suggests that the film may be sad rather then hppy, the fact that hes alone with a travelling bad looking down at his game device could suggest that he isnt too bothered and is an independent boy.

the story impled is that this boy, and the landscape behind him is very open and looks to br a [icture of a cliff and beachside.Looking at the boys costume we can see he looks to be wearing a school uniform so he could be in years 7-10, so i would say this film could be for youbger ages but as it has a more serious approachwith the blue background, i think maybe 13-20 year olds hitting the younger teen market beause of the younger cast.

Layout

The main image of this oster to me, looks like the title of the film 'Take your Time' in bold text, the boy as well so that shows that he is the main character, being in the centre of the poster. With the single award and white border round the poster with the cast and creators round the poster, it makes it very clear what the poster is, and very simple too.

Poster idea for short film.

I went for a poster that is more serious, even though it is a comedy we are also trying to send a message to anyone that watches our short film. I went for white font and black around the text, as I  feel that the font and colour isn't to comedic for the message I am trying to get across in the poster.

Title mock up 2

I have gone for a simple design as i dont feel that this film would have reached a large enough audience to warrant reviews, i think the font colour and slogan match the comedy of the background photograph to convey the comedic aspects of the film perfectly

Wire Cutters Poster Analysis

Media Language

When you look at the poster you instantly think of loneliness. This is what 'Wire Cutters' is trying to achieve a sense of loneliness and it portrays this with the dull grey colours and the only unatural thing in the picture is the little metal box, other then that theres no man made, or man objects or characters around. I think that the audience for this film would be for an older audience, just by looking at the poster, multigender ages 16-40 i would say. From what we can tell the narrative is just something to do with that box and the wire attached because its called wire cutters, the rest remains an enigma. i think the genre would be sci-fi because it doesent look like earth and its something we havent seen before

Layout

The layout of the Films Title, and its reviews and awards are both very low down and out of the way of the main image which gives the poster and image dispayed alot more room then it would normally have, due to the simpicity of the title, just a white font and bold text, it just allows us to get a wider perspective on the picture itself so it feels like a bigger space, representing lonesome.

Attack the Block - Film poster Review

Media Language
The first thing you see when you look at this poster is that is that it is a film that is based in London but that it is also a Sci-Fi film. On this poster they have 7 character which are the 7 main characters of this film. We have one of the characters at the front of them all which mean that he must be the leader of all of them or that the film is based around his life. The other 6 character must be characters that help him along the way. This poster is very dark and gloomy this suggests that this film is a dark film but also it looks like it takes place during the night. Behind the characters there is a large building that looks like it would be a council block and this suggests to me that it is based in London, there are also rocks falling from the sky which suggests to me that this is a movie about aliens taking over the world and the characters have to stop them some how. On this poster there are 6 males characters and one Female character, the male characters are dressed like they don't have that much money which suggest that they live in a rough area. The woman However looks like she earns enough but not enough to live in a nice flat. The camera is at a low angle showing a bit of the building that they are standing on but this also makes us fell as if they have power over us. That we are looking up to them like they are looking up to whatever is falling from the sky. The tittle for this film is at the bottom of the poster along with two audience awards. At the top of the poster we have the words saying "INNER CITY VS OUTER SPACE". We then have the film credits going around the poster creating a block.

Narrative
The poster for this film suggests to me that the films is going to be dark as the look of the poster shows this. it also shows us that this film is going to involve some action as one of the characters has a weapon on their back. The characters come across as being rough them selfs and that they would survive something like an alien invasion. They also look like they are ready for the battle that it going to come. On the building that the characters are standing on there is an claw mark which suggest that they are aliens that have come from space.

Audience
The audience for this film are people over the age of 18. The reason that is think this is the way the poster is portrayed for example, one of the characters has a weapon on his back which mean that he is probably going to be killing something and thats not really something for children to be seeing. It also looks like it would be quite graphic because the poster is dark and gloomy and the fact the character has a weapon i think its going to be graphic. Also the characters their selfs look like teenagers possibly over the age of 18 so that could be linked the the age limit. The claw on the side of the building also suggests to me that the aliens in this movie would not be suitable to children and that they might possibly have nightmares from seeing this film.

Ill Manors - Poster Review.

Media Language

The first thing that you think when you look at this film poster is that it must be something to do with crime in London. One thing that gives this away on he poster is the gun that our main protaganist is holding. The main character the protaganist is in the middle of the poster and he is looking to the side this gives us the impression that he is looking at something that is maybe going on around him. He also has a look of worry on his face. He is also dressed in a hoodie with a coat over the top and a snap back on his head. This is the stereotypical look for a teenager that lives in London. In the background of the poster we can see building which could possibly be a council estate based in London, it is also very dark in the ground by the building this is to symbolise that maybe this all takes place during the night or that bad things happen during the night. It could also mean that there is a dark side to everything that goes on. The title of the film "Ill Manors" is in front of our protaganist and it is covering the front of him and the word "ILL" is massive to symbolise what it is trying to get across about how hard it is to live in a world with crime a rough as this.

They have put a lot of information on this poster, at the top of the poster there is a little quote. Under that there are four reviews from different companies, we then have the title of the film who the film is by in this case it is a "Ben Drew" film and then at the bottom we have when it is in cinemas and the little script at the very bottom. We also have the age you have to be to see this film.

Audience
The audience for this film are anyone over the age of 18. This is because it has an age restriction on the poster but also if you look at the poster it is not suitable for children. They are trying to target the audience by the way they have made the poster look for example, they have put the gun in front of the title so that you can see what the film is possibly going to be about and hopefully the audience will know that it is not for children. Also the way our character is dressed give away that it is a film for adults. The overall look its self is a dead give away that it is for adults as it is dark and gloomy.

Narrative

The poster for this film gives us a clear understanding of what this film is going to be about. This is because the poster has all the conventions and all the stereotypical looks of crimes in London. The main character in the poster almost looks like he doesn't want to do what he is about to do, its almost like he has no other choice and i think that this is what they are trying to portray across because gun crime is such an issue in some parts of London some people are just brought up around the wrong people and sometimes people get dragged into things. I can tell that this film is going to be a dark film as the poster its self is dark so its going to be a film about the issues in London.

Transfert - Short film poster Review.

Media Language
The first thing that you see when you look at this poster is is the title of the poster which is "Transfert" and then you see the little subtitle under the title which shows that this film is foreign. This short film poster is a dark poster with one character on the poster, this tells us that he is the protaganist and is the main character. In the background we can see smoke coming from what looks like a power plant. However we then see on the left side of the poster in the back what looks like trenches this tells me that this short film takes place during the war. Also in the background of the poster there is a lot of rubbish flying through the air. Our main character has his back to the us and is looking at something that is glowing in his hand. this shows the audience that maybe the film is about time travel as there is rubbish flying around him and something is glowing in his hand. The costume that the character is wearing tells us that he is from about the 1960's as it looks like something you would wear in the war. He is wearing a long trench coat trousers and boots.

There are three bits of information on this poster we have the title which is just below the middle of the poster, we have the names of the actors at the top of the poster and last we have the movie poster credit template at the bottom of the poster. All this information is spread out so you are still able to see what the poster is trying to portray.

Genre
The genre for this film is clearly portrayed as a Sci-Fi film as we have the device which looks like it can take our main character back in time. This poster also shows us that it is Sci-Fi through the glow of the device that our character is holding. The rubbish that is flying around the poster also helps us to determined what the device is and what genre is would fit into.

Narrative

The poster also gives us a clear understanding of what the story is going to be about for example, the device in our characters hand shows us that the story us going to revolve around that, the rubbish flying around our character as well as the title shows us that the device has to be some sort of transporter. The title of this short film gives away most of what the story is going to be about and that could possible draw the audience in as they might really like films about time travel.

Short Poster Analyses - Earth: Rise of New Krypton

Media Language

The media language for this poster is simple but affective as the colour for this poster is quite dark which means that there is a dark side to this type of short film. It looks to me that all the characters in the dark costumes with the Superman symbol on there chest are there to take over the earth and i think this is what they are trying to portray to us as an audience. The three characters in the other uniforms look like agents who are there to try and stop them from taking over the earth this is shown through the use of the way they are standing but also the male agent has a gun which tells me that he is an agent. The way the characters are positioned on the poster is that the main character the leader is at the front in a very over powering pose to show that he is the leader. We then have the other two at the back of the poster to show that they are also over powering, this is shown through the way that they are hovering above the air. Then we have the agents all positioned in the middle of the poster. They are all in a powering position of their own to show that they are not afraid to take them on. In the background of the poster we see that there are buildings on fire smoke in the air and glass smashed. This shows us that they might take over the city. On the bottom of the poster on the floor there is a newspaper page that says "Caped Wonder Stuns City" and then there is a picture of Superman, this tells us that maybe Superman is not there to stop them and they are trying to get that across through the poster. The title for the poster you usually expect to be at the top of the poster but in this case it is at the bottom of the poster. I think that this is so they could fill most of the poster with the main picture of the character, that way they can get across what they are trying to portray.

Audience

The audience for this short film are teenagers and possibly adults. However it is also anyone that is into the Superman films as that is what this short film is based off of. It might not be for the younger audience as they possibly might not get what is going on in this film. Because this film is based of of the Superman films then it is clear that the short film is for the Superman fans.

Narrative

The poster gives us a clear understanding of what the story is going to be about for example the title gives us a really good idea of what the story is going to be about. The title "Earth: Rise of New Krypton" says it all that there three characters from Krypton are going to try and take over the earth and turn it into Krypton. There are also aspect of the story that are shown on this poster for example, we see the buildings on fire and the glass smashed which tells us that they are getting far in what they are trying to achieve. Through the use of costume we can tell who are from Krypton and trying to take over the world and who are trying to stop them.

Sightseers Poster Review

Media Language/Genre
The media concepts in this poster are very clever it uses colour and composition to create comedy, the yellow theme colouring throughout the poster gives an indication to the viewer that the film is not a serious one, and that it is in fact a comedy, also the composition reinforces this idea as the two protagonists are shown looking very confused into the distance and below them is a fluffy white dog looking into the distance this adds an incongruous humor to the composition and takes it from looking like a thriller to looking like a comedy.

As well as this the text on the poster indicates its a comedy, the reviews say things like "Terrific... Funny as hell" this tells the audience that that film is a comedy and so they no what to expect when watching it. Also the poster features a section that says from the makers of..... And the directors of this film are responsible for other hit comedies reinforcing the comedic tone of the film.

Representation

The characters on the poster are not represented in a very stereotypical manner they are both looking into the distance with very menacing facial expressions, however this is directly juxtaposed by there weird and goofy dress sense, this juxtaposition emphasizes the congruous humor of what both characters are wearing. And in turn represents them as being goofy and non stereotypical male and female protagonists. The costume of the characters does reveal that the film is set in rural and natural parts of Britain as they are dressed for travelling and extreme weather conditions, this coupled with the green fields in the background and the name of the film give the audience the feel that the film is set on the road, and mainly in rural parts of Britain.

Graffiti Poster Review

Media Language

The cover photo for this poster is a long shot of a man and his dog surrounded by abandoned buildings creating an isolated and desolate initial feel, it also creates a fearful atmosphere, this is reinforced by the juxtaposition of the white pure snow against the dirty and warn buildings surrounding it. The image just about follows the rule of thirds by having 2 thirds snow and the rest building this allows it to flow nicely and look aesthetic to the audience viewing it.

Also the title is very spaced out and this reinforces the idea of isolation as rather than the text being together it is all far apart and is isolated from the other letters.

The protagonist is dressed suitably for the conditions and so it indicates that he has been there for a while and is prepared for the weather and potential issues he could face, we also notice that there is a dog in frame with him reinforcing the idea of isolation as a lot of films play on this mans best friend relationship humans have with dogs in situations of isolation, the dog along with the tag line "he thought he was alone" and the image reinforce the idea that the protagonist is isolated and alone and so he has the dog for companionship.

Audience

The audience that this film is aimed at is definitely males/females aged from about 16 upwards, this is clear from the tone and atmosphere that the poster creates, it gives off a very hostel and isolated feel this makes us think that the film is set in a dystopian world, these concepts could be very frightening to younger audiences which give us a good indication as to who this film would be appropriate for and subsequently what audience the director was going for.

Genre

The genre of this film is loosely portrayed in the poster. The poster gives us an indication of the tone of the film it tells us that the film is most likely a thriller/horror of some sort set in a dystopian world, this is translated by the image on the front of the poster as it portrays the man as isolated and trapped in an empty and worn dystopian world, these negative connotations lead to negative assumptions about the story line of the film and so the maker of the poster/film wants his/her audience to feel this way towards the film and so its genre must have aspects of these emotions within it.

The Blue Umbrella Poster Review

Audience/Narrative

This poster is very simple yet very telling. The poster doesn't really give a lot away initially, but when you look closer you notice that there are a number of black umbrellas of different shapes and sizes all staying in order, but there are two coloured umbrella's not following the patterns of the others around them, they are out of line and are the only two non black umbrellas in frame, this indicates to the audience that the story is about two umbrellas (more than likely personified umbrellas representing people) that don't conform to the normal expectations around them. The umbrellas colour and shape indicate that the blue one is more masculine and maybe represents a man and the red one indicates a female, and based on the positioning of the two umbrellas it reveals to the audience that this is in fact a love story between two personified umbrella's who find love in a world filled with black conformist umbrella's this tells the audience that it is aimed at both men and women, there is also a "Pixar animation studios" watermark underneath the graphic and so this indicates that this is a light hearted love story aimed at men women and children, as Pixar are known for doing short film animations that are enjoyable and relatable for all ages and genders.

Genres

This is an animated short film that falls into more than one genre it is a family, fantasy, and a romantic short film, the poster reveals all of this. it tells the audience that it is suitable for all the family as it has Pixar animations on it, and they are a company that exclusively make family friendly animated films/short films, this immediately tells the viewer/audience that they shouldn't expect anything unsuitable for a family.

The poster indicates that it is a fantasy as it has personified umbrellas in the covering graphic, this subsequently indicates to the audience that it is not a hyper realistic short film and that it is set in a fantasy made world. The romance comes in as the two umbrellas who are different colours and shapes are personified to be more masculine and feminine by following conventions of masculine/feminine shapes and colours and this indicate's that the umbrellas have a gender and that they are in love as they are leaning towards each other in the poster.

Step Brothers Poster Review

This is an original and ingenious poster design, it essentially mocks the stereotypical "family photo" by having the characters dress up and pose in the normal "family photo". the comedy comes from the incongruity of the two characters age and how they don't fit in with this "family photo" .

Representation

The film is about two men who haven't moved out and become step brothers living together the film follows the two characters as they bond and grow with each other in a very funny manner. This poster plays off of that and is trying to represent the two characters so that the audience can get an idea for what kind of film lies ahead. The comedy throughout the film is very incongruous and so the poster try's to portray that it does that by placing the two characters in a family photo typical of young brothers as memories for there parents to keep. However these two are men and so it is very odd for them to be doing such a shoot, this immediately sets a tone for the film. The characters are represented as being very childish as portrayed by the setting of the poster and they are also shown to be quite green, this is also represented by the poster as the audience can clearly see the two characters are both looking the wrong way and not at the camera, this creates comedy and builds a picture in the audience's head as to what to expect from the two characters. They are also both men dressed like twins and dressed in middle/upper class clothes this again helps to create comedy and helps to develop the characters further by making them look like they've been dressed by their mum although they are both in there 40's, this creates comedy and reinforces the comedic expectations for the film, it also gives us an indication as to what lifestyle they live based on what they're wearing and the conventions of the class they come from.

Narrative

The poster gives a good indication as to what the film is about. The main aspects of the poster that do this are:
  • The title
  • The image and its setting
  • The positioning of the characters and there expressions
  • The strap-line
  • And the actors
These things give away a lot about the story, the title references the main plot of the film, the image setting and composition of the characters reinforces the title as they are in a family style photo shoot giving away the family aspect of the film and giving away the genre as its a funny image giving conventions of a comedy, the strap line reinforces the idea of it being a comedy as it uses a typical phrase and applies it in an extreme manor making it incongruously funny, And finally we are reinforced that its a comedy because of the actors listed and shown on the poster as they are both actors known for playing big roles in hit comedy films almost exclusively.

Genre

The genre of the film (comedy) is portrayed in the poster in a number of different ways. For example the two actors who are shown on the poster are almost exclusively known for acting in comedies and for being comedians, this immediately indicates to the audience that this film is more than likely a comedy. This is then further reinforced by the poster using setting and stereotypes to create incongruous comedy, the film plays on the fact that they are both way too old to be living at home and to be having "family pictures" taken of them, this incongruous comedy confirms to the audience that this is a comedic film as it follows the conventions of a comedy by having the comedic actors and incongruous image.

Poster Idea

Poster Idea

For this poster idea I wanted to encapture the typical setting of an interview, I did this with the main image and the font. The main image is a waiting room filled with well dressed people and it is clear they are all waiting to be interviewd. The title gives a clue as to the story of the film as well as that the font is very clean and is similar to that used in the buisness world which relates directly to the theme I was trying to portray. However I wanted to encapture some silly aspects to relate to the protagonist and so I made the font blue which is aesthetic and yet not typical of a buissness and so encaptures the sillyness of the protagonist.

Permission

We haven't received permission from our places of interest yet as they are very busy but we have been assured that It will be okay. The permissions will be put on the blog when they have been received.

Applying Audience

Applying audience

The audience that we are going for in our short film are teenagers as a lot of people our age can relate to this, as they would be getting jobs and going for interviews but also because some people might have a younger brother or sister that has ADHD, so they can relate to this even more. the reason we haven't gone for an younger audience is because they wouldn't really get what is going on and they wouldn't understand it. Our short film isn't really gender specific as it can happen to anyone which means a lot more people can relate to this, which means we have a better chance of our audience understanding where we are coming from in our film. Our social class for this particular film is middle class. Our platform that we will screen our film on would probably be youtube as people our age use youtube more than the older generation and our target audience is people our age. Also it'd free to watch on, also our social class that we are going for would have access to youtube. For example, we would also like it to be shown in a short film competition as it is different and unique and i haven't really seen any short film or film that has this type of problem in it. Most people there would also be able to relate to this.

Applying Media Language to our final idea.

Applying Media Language

We have applied media language to most of our shot. There are a lot of techniques that we have used in our shots, for example, we have used a range of different angles and shot sizes in our short film. there is one scene where Jordan's character Ted is looking at a paintball gun, in this shot we are having a side on close up on Ted's face to show his facial expressions but also so the audience can see the gun and know what he is looking at. The first shot of our short film is going to be on the side of a car and this technique is a really good but effective as it is different but also you get to see where the car is going and this will help the audience understand where it is based. We have also thought a lot about our characters and how to construct them. For example Ted is someone who has ADHD but tries his best to keep focus and he also tries hard to impress, this has helped us with creating a the character. Harry is a childhood and best friend of Ted and has always put up with Ted so he understands what he is going through. These descriptions of the characters helped us with the mise en scene of our characters, Ted is going to be wearing a smart casual suit but not to smart, Harry will be wearing a hoodie and jeans as he is in the car and so is not going to be seen by anyone else but Ted. So all together media language has helped us with the shots and angles but most importantly creating a character through using media language.

Genre

Our short film 'The Interview' is a comedic drama. It has a lot of comedic aspects throughout we are going to use the relief theory of comedy to make the audience laugh this will work as the comedy is very relatable to our target audience and so they will find humour in the silly way the protagonist is acting. The drama aspect is important as we want to relay a message to our audience that there is a job out there for all types of people and we are going to do this by having underlying messages of thruth and emotion from our characters throughout pivotal scenes. This coupled with the ending of the film (which is Ted getting a job somewhere creative) this will help to reinforce the underlining message that theres a job for everyone no matter what your talents are. This is a relevant message for our target audience as they are of the age of job hunting and choosing there future and so will relate to this on a personal level, especially as the world os starting to recognise people with different abilities and finding jobs for them.

'The Interview' Script

Audience Feedback

This is feedback from our targtet market allowing us to know they're thoughts on the idea and what we could potentially fail at doing if we dont pay close attention throughout production.

Animatics 2

Jordan edited and wrote the script for this animatic and me and Tom spoke and recorded it.

Applying Narrative to our final idea.

 Applying Narrative

The narrative for our final idea is that our story is linear. it does have a structure to it and it does have a story and the audience will get what we are trying to put across. At the begining of our short film the audicne will find out who Ted and Harry are and what their relationship is like. The audience will then slowly find out what ted is like and how he starts to day dream and how Harry deal with it. The story is that Ted is trying to look for a job and if he can get a job becuase of what he is like. As we get further into the story we find out that Ted can't help the way he is and Harry has an understanding of that. There are two main shots that foreshadow something later on to happen. The first shot is the shot of Harry and Ted in the car and this shot is shown 5 times throughout the short film, this shot mainly happens after each interview, This is so we can see what each of the characters are feeling at that point in time and what they have to say. The next shot which foreshadows something later on to happen is the shot of Ted sitting in the interview waiting room, this shot is shown twice throughout the film the first time it does not go so well so the second time that the audience see this they will think back to the first time and think that it is going to go wrong again. We want the audicne to feel for Ted and understand what it is he is going tbrough and by having these shots we can hopefully get the audience to understand and feel for Ted. We also what them to understand the way Harry feels when he has to deal with Ted.

Representation in our Film

The main social group that we show off are the younger groups, espessially the jobless youths because our film is about a young man trying to find a job however, all the interviews are a failiure for him and he can never succeed in finding a job. This is because ur character finds it hard to focus and is always loosing focus on the interviews and ends up screwing it up for himself. We are representing being young and jobless as a struggle, however the meaning to our film is that everyone is special and i you search in the right places, hard enough, you're meant for something out there, and its also to restore hope in younger people minds, as our main character, Ted, finds a job in creative marketing, which is what he specialises in as he has such a wild mind.

The main issue is that it becomes harder and harder for people with disablilites to find a job, and this is not their fault no one can help a disablity and so we want to adress in our piece that actually anyone can get a job, so for our Character Ted, who suffers with ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and is constantly loosing focus and thinks about different things; he gets a job in creative marketing which is perfect for him because he could go on and on with ideas. This film should be inspiring or younger audiences and we hope thatthis encouroges people that they actually are speical.

Animatic 1

Mo's Costume

Mo, our final interviewer, works for a creative company, and he's a bit of a hipster too, he wears a checkerd shirt and black skinny jeans with specs too.

Jonny's Costume

Jonny, who is a paintball marshal, would wear the uniform, so while wearing this it shows he works there and is quite a scruffy look too.

Lee's Costume

Lee is the first interviewer who is an older man played by Sam's dad, so as he's older he should be a bit more sophisticated and smart, so i think he should wear a sharp suit to look a bit intimidating.

Harry's Costume

The secondary character, Harry is Ted'sbest friend and room mate, being the weekend Harry is wearing a layed back hoodie and jeans becuase hes out and about but only in a car so not to bothered about his appearance.

Ted's Costume

Our main character played by Jordan, will wear a smart casual suit that dosent look too smart, blazer, shirt and jeans casual look. this is becuase he is going for interviews and he dosent want to wear someting really smart, so smart casual it is.
